At Aqua Master, we understand that clear, balanced pool water is essential to an enjoyable swimming experience. When the water changes in appearance, it’s often a sign that an adjustment is needed. Behind a simple change in color can hide imbalances that are best addressed quickly. In this article, we’ll explore the reasons why your pool may turn green, the solutions to fix it, and most importantly, how to prevent this issue.

Why Is My Pool Water Green?

No one wants to see their pool water lose its clarity. The most common causes are:

  • Algae growth: The most frequent cause of green water is the presence of algae. These microorganisms grow quickly in the presence of sunlight, heat, and nutrients (such as nitrates and phosphates).
  • Chemical imbalance: If the water’s parameters are not properly balanced particularly pH, chlorine, and alkalinity, algae can multiply rapidly.
  • Poor filtration: A dirty or faulty filter cannot effectively remove algae and other particles, which can make the water cloudy and give it a greenish tint. Insufficient circulation also promotes algae growth.
  • Organic debris: Leaves, branches, and other debris that fall into the pool can feed algae and negatively affect water quality.

Solutions to Restore Clear Water

Here’s how to get your water crystal clear again:

  1. Stop by your local Aqua Master store for personalized advice from our experts. Or, if you’d rather take care of it yourself:
  2. Test your pool’s pH and adjust it to 7.2 or lower, if needed.
  3. Use the Aqua Master Universal Kit, or follow the targeted treatment steps below:
  4. In the morning, pour the recommended dose of Pisci-Kill algaecide into the pool.
  5. Brush the walls and floor thoroughly to dislodge algae. If phosphate levels are high, also add Pisci Phos Plus.
  6. In the evening, dilute one or more doses of Pisci Choc (based on the dosage for visible algae) in a bucket of water, then pour the mixture into the pool.
  7. Wait 24 hours. A good sign the treatment is working: the water should appear milky white the next morning.
  8. Add Pool Clarifier, following the instructions on the bottle.
  9. After 24 hours of continuous filtration, perform a backwash or rinse your cartridge filter.
  10. Repeat the shock treatment daily until the water becomes clear. If the problem persists after 72 hours, return to your local Aqua Master stoke for a more in-depth analysis.
  11. Once the water is clear, rebalance your pool’s chemistry to keep it in optimal condition.
